The UK/China Graduate Work Experience Programme

Jason, Ish and Jane at UK / China internship event

The UK/China Graduate Work Experience Programme is a joint project of the UK Government’s Department for Innovation, Universities & Skills and the Ministry of Education in China. The programme aims to promote academic, cultural and business understanding between the two countries; and therefore offers up to 200 of China’s most promising university students the opportunity to live and work in the UK for 3 to 12 months. There are presently over 100 graduates from China in employment with UK companies as part of this programme; many of whom have already impressed their employers so much that they have been offered full time roles with these employers both in the UK and upon their return to China.

To date over 50% of the sixty businesses taking part in the programme are from the banking and finance sector with companies such as Standard Chartered Bank, Lehman Brothers, JP Morgan, Swiss Re, Royal & Sun Alliance, Nomura, ISI Emerging Markets, Euromoney and the CLSA supporting the programme.

GAAPS is participating in this year’s programme and welcomes Jason Li who has joined us as a trainee consultant for the upcoming year.

Ish and Jane welcomed Jason when they attended the welcome event of the UK / China Graduate Work Experience Programme at London Zoo.

32 new interns and their employers had the opportunity to meet and mingle. The event organizers – GTI gave introductory talks and we could finally put names to faces. GTI have been excellent and involvement in the programme has been seemless and effortless from our end.

For more info about the programme visit www.ukchinagrad.com or read the GTI press release and the BBC News report (Chinese).

Since 2002 GAAPS Actuarial has regularly organised careers fairs for candidates, which are attended by leading actuarial recruiters. These fairs provide a unique opportunity to candidates to meet face to face with the employers and find out first hand what the top actuarial employers are looking for.

The next GAAPS Actuarial Careers fair will be on the 24th of April at the University of Pretoria in South Africa. We will also be holding events at Heriot Watt and Imperial College London later in the year.

If you are an actuarial employer that would like to participate in these events please contact Dr Geraldine Kaye at GAAPS on 020 7397 6200 or email gkaye@gaaps.com.

Sign up as a fan of GAAPS on Facebook so that we can keep you updated with the details of future actuarial careers fairs or register here for the Pretoria event.

Paris Paris

As the only recruiter sponsoring ‘La Nuit des Actuaires,’ GAAPS were proud and privileged to attend the gala on Saturday 28th April. At the lovely location of Le Pavillion Dauphine, it was the sixth year of the event, and it’s not hard to see why this is now a fixed date in everyone’s diary.

As a sponsor, we were invited to enjoy a pre-event buffet with Presidents of Actuarial Institutes, committee members and other sponsors. There were introductions and speeches from Vincent Meister, President of the Kactu’Z Association, President of the Institute of French Actuaries Thomas Behar, the guest speaker Julian Oliver, President of Institute of Spanish Actuaries.

The evening was later then opened to the rest of the French actuarial institute and guests. There were different attractions in each different room including a candy room, (with all the sweets you can dream of), a massage parlour (which was a heaven sent to all us ladies in heels); a dancefloor once the heels had had their rest and a live jazz band to name but a few!

The pavilion was filled with actuaries from all the organisations and from all the levels. Everyone seemed to have a blast – we definitely did and we’re already looking forward to next year!
