Excellent Presentations at PRAG AGM

On Tuesday I attended the PRAG AGM. Although PRAG’s name is the shortened form of Pensions Research Accountants Group, there were lots of pension managers and a handful of actuaries as well.

I must get in a plug for PRAG because I used to be on their committee. Membership provides wonderful value for money. I arrived after the formal AGM just in time to time to hear Andrew Reid of Credit Suisse give a presentation on Longevity Swaps. Although we have placed candidates in buy-out companies it was only after hearing Andrew’s presentation that I truly understood the differences between the various companies and how they operate. At lunch the general consensus on our table was how clear his presentation had been.

After lunch there was a talk by Hamish Wilson on Pension Risk Sharing followed by a talk about PADA and its successor organization (the new name is expected to be announced early in the New Year). Again a wonderfully clear presentation by Richard Bartlett who also provided his direct contact details for anyone in the audience who wanted further information and clarification.

Unfortunately I was not able to stay for the last presentation, a Corporate View of Future Pension Provision by Martin Mannion of GSK. I am sure that that would have been an equally informative session.

Actuarial Society of South Africa Launches New Qualification

On Monday night the Actuarial Society of South Africa held a formal dinner to launch their new actuarial qualification to the media and external stakeholders.

The launch of the new qualification is linked to a wider strategy of establishing the Actuarial Society as a full service professional body and is a tremendous milestone for the Society. The qualification is internationally recognised and a Mutual Recognition Agreement was signed with The Actuarial Profession (UK) in May.

The move is intended to ensure that actuaries have an in-depth knowledge of South African practice, products, legislation and tax, while also understanding international best practice.

The Actuarial Society of South Africa is looking to incorporate Enterprise Risk Management as part of the South African qualification at the earliest possible opportunity as this is a field of increasing interest to South African actuaries.

At GAAPS we wish the Actuarial Society of South Africa the best of luck in their latest venture.

No Change to Limited Company Opt-out

The government has published the results from its consultation on changes to Conduct Regulations. It had been feared that changes would be made to the Limited Company opt-out but thankfully this has not been touched for either limited company contractors or umbrellas.

GIRO Success for Chaim!

GAAPS are pleased to announce that Chaim Coutts received very positive feedback from delegates to the GIRO conference for both the presentation and content of his popular workshop on talent management.

A number of delegates commented on the good use of speakers from outside the profession and indicated that they would like this to be encouraged in the future. There was even a request for the 2010 Plenary to include another session on talent management within the non-life sector. Clearly a sign of Chaim’s success.

Heriot Watt Careers Fair a Success

There were far more companies and students at this years fair than we have ever seen before. Obviously news of how successful the fair is has promulgated. We received a very warm welcome to the fair and the short welcoming speech will be uploaded to YouTube in due course.

An innovation for this year’s careers fair was holding it in the maths department. This idea proved to be a successful way of attracting additional maths students who were walking past, meaning that, although, ostensibly, not what the fair was for, those companies looking for sandwich interns were able to find them.
